One of my Shadows lucked out when a monster dropped a Unique and powerful one-handed sword early in Act 1. Don’t be so tightly focused on an ideal weapon set that you fail to take advantage of unexpected opportunities that arise during the game. You’ll reap the most benefit from the many options that are open to you if you are flexible as well. Path of Exile builds an exceptional degree of flexibility into almost every aspect of the game. 'Path of Exile' Credit: Grinding Gear Games Choosing one of these and pairing it with a bow gives the Shadow both short and long range combat options. For example, the Shadow’s specialized weapons are daggers and claws, both of which are ideal for close-in fighting. Choosing a non-specialized weapon that your character can use effectively can greatly increase your options in combat. Keep in mind that you can easily switch back and forth between two equipped weapons in Path of Exile. Some are not, however, and you can create very powerful weapons if you chart a path through the Tree that picks up the weapon’s outer and intermediate nodes. Many of the weapon-specific nodes are in the outer edge of the Tree. Once you have an idea about the weapon you want to use, find the nodes in the Passive Skill Tree that confer advantages for that weapon.
If casting speed is central to your build, your weapon will be a wand and you’ll have to find or craft one that has a casting speed buff. For example, some wands will confer increased elemental damage while others increase casting speed. The different buffs associated with each type of weapon can be found on individual weapons. Choose the weapon with the buff that best suits your intended playstyle. The Templar and Shadow have nine additional weapons they can use effectively while the Ranger and Marauder have six. The remaining character classes have two specialized weapons each. The Witch, on the other hand, has only one specialized weapon, the Wand, and can only make effective use of four others (claw, dagger, staff and scepter). Only the wand is outside his areas of expertise, and the one and two-handed swords and axes are specialized for his combination of Dexterity and Strength. He can use 12 of the 13 weapon types effectively. The information in the table reveals that the Duelist is the weapons master.
